PITTSBURGH -- Walmart has announced new security plans and hours for Black Friday shopping. The changes were made because of an incident last year when a Walmart employee was killed at a Long Island store.A security guard died when a crowd of Black Friday shoppers broke down the store doors and trampled the man. This year, Walmart will open most of its stores at 6 a.m. Thanksgiving morning and stay open through Friday night. Last year the stores closed Thanksgiving night and reopened early Friday creating long lines. The chain hopes this will help prevent a mad rush of customers. However, Black Friday specials will not be available until 5 a.m. the day after Thanksgiving. The store is also changing how customers enter stores. Shoppers will be dispersed throughout the stores as opposed to all being right by the front door. The plan calls for door buster items to be placed apart to prevent big crowds from gathering.Flow through the checkout aisles will also be changed. Walmart used safety experts who worked with major events like the Super Bowl and Olympics to come up with the new safety plans.Customers will be provided with maps that show the location of Black Friday deals.
