Two people who Ambridge police spotted standing in an alleyway soaking wet on Wednesday have been charged with stealing copper.

Officers found Douglas L. Biers Jr., 32, and Elisabeth Moakley, 33, dripping wet in an alley off Duss Avenue at about 12:50 a.m. Wednesday.

Police said the pair tried to steal copper pipes from a vacant home and didn't realize the water was still on.

"When we went down into the basement, one of the pipes was broken and there were fresh footprints in the water tracked out of the basement up to the house. We were able to match the suspects boot prints with the tracks in the basement," said Brian Jameson of the Ambridge Police Department.

According to police the two left the house not only drenched, but kept their flashlights on and were very loud as they ran toward police.

Jameson said police also found a backpack with a hammer in it, and police found a footprint at the scene that matched the shoes worn by Biers.

Police said Moakley confessed to everything.

Biers and Moakley both face burglary and other charges.
