Old Economy Village May Close For Good

Old Economy Village in Ambridge, Beaver County may close for good because of state budget cuts.

The site is the home of the Harmony Society, a 19th-century Christian communal group. It has been owned and operated by the state since 1919.

It's estimated that between 20,000 and 30,000 people visit Old Economy Village annually.

Now state officials say it will be one of six historical sites to be closed.

The new budget passed last month cut funding for the historical and museum sites by almost $16 million.

Layoff of staff members has already started.

Mary Ann Landis, former director of the historical site, said, “Old Economy Village has 17 buildings that rely on tour guides and re-enactors. To cut the site's staff by more than half will cause tours and special events to be canceled.”

It’s hoped volunteer organizations can help with the operation of the village. If not, it may be closed for good.
