Jack Slips, Crushes Man Working On Car In Jeannette

A Blairsville man was killed by a car that fell on him when a jack slipped as he worked on the vehicle in his grandparents' driveway in Jeannette.

Westmoreland County deputy coroner Gerald Fritz said Kevin Garland Jr., 24, died of asphyxiation Wednesday night.

The Honda was propped up by a scissor jack while Garland was working on it at the Ellsworth Avenue house, but the jack slipped and the car landed on him, Jeannette police said.

Fritz said the man's grandmother found him under the car and called 911 at about 7:40 p.m. He was pronounced dead at Excela Westmoreland Hospital at about 8:30 p.m.
