Eighteen clinics across the state opened Friday to administer swine flu vaccinations. An hour before the opening, people lined up outside the H1N1 clinic in Monessen, West Moreland County.“I got books packed. I got a snack packed,” said Tara McHugh, who wanted to have her children vaccinated before holiday travel plans. “We’ve got warm clothes so we kind of figured that would be the way it is.”The first open swine flu clinic will open Friday in Butler County to distribute 6,500 vaccinations. The Pennsylvania State Health Department will enter new territory, as there has never been an open clinic for H1N1.

“We’ve never had to do this,” said Artis Hall from the state Health Department. “We don’t know how it’s going to go.”In Pennsylvania there has not been a mass vaccination like this since the 70s.The clinics are opening in a number of areas around the state to treat high-risk patients who have pre-registered.There will be separate tables for infants, toddlers and older people as the crews administer the H1N1 vaccinations.Workers are trying to be patient and organized as calls continue to pour and officials expect the clinic to be hectic. At Moon Middle School in Moon Township, parents and children lined up Thursday night for the vaccine.A clinic was held in the cafeteria after the district received 600 doses."Seventy percent of the cases, I believe, are being confirmed in the school districts and the children bring it home and they infect everyone else, so this is a main target demographic," said Amanda Hartle of the Moon School District. In the meantime, Channel 11 News has learned of another death related to the H1N1 virus. A 57-year-old woman from Allegheny County died earlier this month from the virus, health officials said. That brings the total number of deaths in the Pittsburgh area to 12.According to the state Health Department, there are nearly 1,900 confirmed cases in Allegheny County, the highest number for any county in the state.
Officials released these specifics about the clinics:
The Allegheny Health Department is offering the swine flu vaccine at four free clinics on Saturday. The clinics will be at Chartiers Valley High School, McKeesport High School, North Allegheny High School and Schenley High School.Vaccines will be given out from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Saturday. No appointment is necessary, but the vaccines are only for high priority groups. The Health Department will conduct statewide clinics from Nov. 20-22 to administer free H1N1 vaccines to individuals in the recommended target groups that have not had previous access to the vaccine.Appointments must be made ahead of time at www.H1N1PA.com.
