Posted: 4:52 pm EST November 23, 2009Updated: 5:24 pm EST November 23, 2009

Work to carefully remove the Romare Bearden mural from the Gateway Station in Downtown Pittsburgh is under way.

Channel 11 got a look at the process Monday.

A contractor is cutting the tiled mural piece-by-piece away from a concrete wall within the station, which is closed.

A new station is being built nearby. Port Authority plans to store the mural, entitled "Pittsburgh Recollections" during construction and then place it in the new station.
