Baldwin Students Suspended After 'Sexting' Incident

An inappropriate text message sent by an eighth grade student in Baldwin resulted in the suspension of seven students on Monday.

The superintendent said a Harrison Middle School student sent a photo of herself, but would not give details about the picture.

“The girl sent an inappropriate message. It was not pornographic, but it was definitely suggestive,” said the superintendent. “The girl was distraught for making a stupid mistake.”

According to school officials, the students were suspended for three days because they violated the school’s cell phone policy when they used their phones to view the photo of the girl during school hours.

“It’s amazing what these kids are doing with their cell phones. It amazes me,” said Whitehall resident Cindy Peterson.

Last week, a poll said “sexting” is fairly commonplace among young people.

According to the poll, a quarter of teens have been involved in “sexting” of some form. The poll also said 17 percent of those who received naked pictures passed them along to multiple contacts.

About 10 percent said they used their cell phones to send naked pictures of themselves.
