BUTLER, Pa. -- A man who suffered a stroke while he was in a western Pennsylvania jail for missing a court date for a suspended license will receive $55,000 after claiming his medical problems were misdiagnosed.

Butler County officials are not acknowledging fault in settling the federal lawsuit filed by James Raub, of Butler, who was jailed for more than a week in April 2006.

While incarcerated, Raub complained of back and internal pain, cold sweats and chills. He claims he was misdiagnosed as withdrawing from drugs and didn't get help until he was rushed to the hospital for heart valve surgery following a stroke.

County attorney Michael English said the suit settled to save money. Raub's attorney, Alexander Lindsay, said the settlement was fair.
