Tractor-Trailer Driver Arrested; Grape Juice Spills Onto I-79

The driver of a tractor-trailer that jackknifed and overturned along Interstate 79 Monday morning was arrested on charges of driving under the influence.

The accident occurred at about 12:45 a.m. near the 98 mile marker as heavy snow started to fall in the area.

State police in Butler closed the northbound lanes between the Portersville and Slippery Rock exits after the crash and did not reopen the road until nearly 8 a.m.

“Another couple of seconds and he probably would have plowed us,” said witness Pat Loader.

Commuters headed northbound were trapped behind the accident scene until emergency crews were able to upright the vehicle and clean up debris. Vehicles were detoured around the 10-mile stretch affected by the crash.

Police said the truck was carrying grape juice, which spilled across the roadway.

Police arrested 51-year-old Thomas Long of Union City on charges of DUI. Officials said his blood-alcohol level was three times the legal limit.

Hiner Transportation issued a statement which said, “"We do not condone such behavior from our employees. We are grateful no one was hurt in this accident."

Long was not seriously hurt and was taken to the Butler County Jail.
