Blood Drive Held Inside Steelers' Locker Room

The Pittsburgh Steelers teamed up with the Central Blood Bank Monday for the annual Locker Room Blood Drive.

The blood collected from last year's drive is credited with saving more than 2,000 lives.

This year's drive started at 11 a.m. and will last until 7 p.m.

The event is taking place in the Steelers' locker room at Heinz Field.

At various times throughout the day, current and former Steelers players and staff as well as team mascot Steely McBeam will be on hand to personally thank the donors who participate.

Former players said the Steelers organization teacher the importance of community.

“It goes all the way back to the Chief, someone who just gave so freely of himself, and that has been handed on for generation to generation from the Chief to Dan Rooney to his son Art II,” said Tunch Ilkin.

Last December, the Steelers' holiday drive was dedicated to defensive end Aaron Smith's son Elijah, who has leukemia.

"Partnering with the Pittsburgh Steelers has been a rewarding experience for Central Blood Bank and has helped us continue to provide a high level of care to area patients in need of blood transfusions," said Judi Matok, Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for Central Blood Bank.

All participating donors at the drive will receive a Steelers' 2009 team photo, a one-of-a-kind T-shirt and entry into random drawings for autographed Steelers merchandise.

Free parking will also be available for donors in Gold Lot 1A.

Individuals who are interested in donating at this event should call Central Blood Bank at 412-209-7080.

Blood donors must be at least 16 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds, and be in generally good health. Proper ID is required to donate blood. A Central Blood Bank or military ID, driver's license, or employee badge with picture and full name are all approved forms of ID.
