I-80 In Venango County Back Open After Chemical Spill

CLINTONVILLE, Pa. -- Seven miles of westbound Interstate 80 are back open in Venango County after a tanker overturned Wednesday night, spilling a toxic chemical across the highway.Pennsylvania Department of Transportation spokeswoman Deborah Casadei said the road was closed from exit 35 to exit 42. The exits are near Clintonville, about 75 miles northeast of Pittsburgh.

Venango County 911 supervisor Linda Holtz said drivers were advised to keep their windows up when driving through the area to avoid inhaling the sodium hydrosulfide solution.She said the chemical is toxic and emergency workers had to evacuate a 150-foot area around the spill.Holtz said residents were not evacuated from their homes but were asked to remain inside as a precaution.
