PITTSBURGH -- A dog was placed in quarantine Wednesday after police said it viciously attacked a woman in Millvale.Police told Channel 11's Jodine Costanzo that the pit bull, Gino, was on a leash being walked by the girlfriend of the dog's 17-year-old owner. That's when, investigators said, the dog attacked a 58-year-old woman as she was also walking along North Avenue to a nearby restaurant to meet friends."Without provocation, the pit bull lunged up and attacked my client and bit her through the coat she was wearing," the woman's personal injury attorney, Thomas Berrett, told Channel 11.The bite punctured the woman's right arm, Berrett said. The dog owner and his mother, Christina Gonzalez were not home Wednesday, but police said after the attack, no one at this house tried to help the victim. They all ran inside, leaving the woman bleeding on the sidewalk, investigators said.Barrett says his client is traumatized and likely needs plastic surgery. He's planning to file a negligence suit against the owners.“The fact this dog was able to inflict this sort of injury regardless of whether it was on a leash is evidence in itself, that somebody did something wrong," Barrett said.Humane officers are charging Gonzalez and her son with felony possession of a dangerous dog charges. They're also being cited because it doesn't have rabies shots or a license.A court hearing will determine whether the family gets the dog back, but humane officers told Channel 11 for the safety of others, they recommend the dog be put down."Once they bite and taste blood, they're just gonna keep biting," said Paul McIntyre of Triangle Pet.The dog will remain caged up until a judge decides what happens to him, but its unlikely Gino will ever be back on the streets.
