Fierce Flames Destroy Shaler Township Home

Two women are homeless after their home in Shaler Township was completely destroyed in a massive fire Tuesday night.

The blaze started at about 10:30 p.m. at a home along West Sutter Road. It took 75 firefighters more than four hours to put the flames out.

Firefighters said the two women who lived in the home were using the fireplace when they noticed more smoke than usual. They went outside and saw the flames, then tried to put the fire out themselves before eventually calling firefighters.

The fire was difficult to fight because the chimney of the fireplace was located in the center of the home, firefighters said.

The American Red Cross helped the two victims with food and clothing.
