PITTSBURGH -- A Wilkinsburg man learned his punishment Tuesday for attacking his fiancee with a samurai-style sword.
Brandon Burnett (pictured, right) severed parts of Lea Turk's hands in November 2002.
During the trial, Turk, 24, supported her attacker.
Tuesday, she told the district attorney she wants to marry the man who nearly cut off both her hands.
She'll have to wait a while since Burnett is headed for jail. His friend called it an outrage.
Burnett's friend Daymian Boyd said, "It's the system that failed again."
Burnett's
mother tried her best to convince the judge her son needed medical help for his paranoid schizophrenia, but the real surprise came from the victim.
Turk (pictured, left) told the judge she had a hand in the brutal attack - telling the judge she taunted her much smaller fiance by calling him weak, mocking him, by telling him he fought like a girl.
She went on to describe the blows by the sword telling the judge Burnett stopped when she told him he had cut off her hands.
She tried to take some of the blame but it didn't work. The judge sentenced Burnett to prison followed by probation.
Prosecutor Brent McCune said, "It was a little bewildering to see her today be so forgiving because at one point, she was seeking witness protection and relocation; that he was a dangerous individual."
The prosecutor told reporters Turk wants to marry Burnett in jail. Burnett received five to 10 of state time plus medical treatment.
At the last minute, Burnett changed his plea from guilty to guilty but mentally ill.
Burnett will serve a minimum of five years. After that, a parole board will decide where he should go.
