Target 11 Catches Speeders On Local Roads

Posted: 6:14 p.m. EDT August 7, 2003Updated: 6:26 p.m. EDT August 7, 2003

Since Target 11's first Speed Buster report aired, hundreds of people have complained about speeding in their neighborhoods.

Target 11 takes you to Glen Eden Road in New Sewickley Township Thursday.

One neighbor calls Glen Eden Road a speed magnet, so Target 11 brought out the speed gun to see if she is right.

Glen Eden Road is a winding road which neighbors say is used by commuters traveling from Rochester or Zelienople to Cranberry.

The posted speed limit is 40 mph.

"Do you know how fast you were going?" Target 11's Karen Welles asked one unidentified driver.

"I don't have a clue. I don't have a clue," the man said.

"The speed limit here is 40. We got you at 51," Welles said.

"Did you? Well, it's quite possible. I've used this road all my life," the man said.

"Are you going to slow down?" Welles asked.

"Probably not," the man responded.

Target 11 gave drivers a cushion of 10 miles over the speed limit before questioning them as they came to a stop sign at Route 68.

"Do you know how fast you were going?" Welles asked another unidentified driver.

"I don't really know," the woman said.

"We got you at 53," Welles said.

"And what's the speed limit here?" the woman asked.

"It's 40," Welles responded.

"Really? OK, I'll have to pay attention," the woman responded.

One guy was going 15 miles over the speed limit, but didn't want to talk to Target 11 about it.

One woman was also driving 55.

"We got you at 55 and the speed limit here is 40," Welles said.

"OK," the woman said.

"Do you always go that fast?" Welles asked.

"No, usually not. I'm just in a hurry," the woman said.

"We're from Channel 11. We're clocking people up the road. Do you know how fast you were going by any chance?" Welles asked another unidentified man.

"No, I don't," the man responded.

"You were going 55," Welles said.

"What's the speed limit?" the man asked.

"40," Welles said.

"Ha, ha. You're not going to arrest me are you?" the man said.

"No, I can't arrest you but why were you going so fast?" Welles asked.

"Obviously, I wasn't paying attention. I will be tomorrow -- I promise," the man said.

Police say they do have a speeding problem on Glen Eden Road and do give out citations, but they also say they see speeders on other township roads as well.
