3 teens taken into police custody after chase through North Hills

ALLEGHENY COUNTY, Pa. — Three teenagers were taken into custody overnight Sunday after a vehicle chase through eight communities in Pittsburgh’s North Hills, police said.

An officer tried to stop the vehicle just after midnight in Edgeworth for not having a taillight, but the 16-year-old driver kept going, police said.

The officer stopped pursuing it after a few blocks. However, police in other communities picked up the chase, which ended about a half an hour later on McKnight Road in McCandless Township.

“He chased it into Sewickley. There was no traffic on the roads at the time, really no danger,” Edgeworth police Chief John English said. “He said, ‘I wasn't sure exactly where the car was. I wasn't going to go racing down the boulevard and try to find it if the other units were picking up on it.’”

Stop sticks blew out tires on both the vehicle and an Avalon police cruiser, officials said. The 16-year-old got out and ran before he was caught near the Outback Steakhouse.

No one was injured during the chase, but police said that at one point the vehicle being chased drove toward an Ohio Township officer’s cruiser.

A 15-year-old passenger in the vehicle had a warrant out for his arrest in connection with a robbery in Beaver County. He was taken to the Shuman Juvenile Detention Center.

The driver is facing charges including reckless endangerment, fleeing from police and several traffic violations. The vehicle was his parents’ rental.

A 13-year-old girl was also in the vehicle, but is not being charged.
