Police Break Up Dogfighting Ring

Underground Magazine Leads Suspects To Officials

Monday, two suspected dogfighting promoters have a new fight on their schedule. Only this time they'll be the ones fighting to stay out of jail.

Investigators said people would bet as much as $10,000 on a single fight. But now all bets are off.

Police arrested James Fricchoine, of New York, and John "Jack" Kelly, of Georgia, for promoting dogfights.

Investigators caught up with them through an underground magazine they published, The Sporting Dog Journal.

Even though dogfighting is a crime in all 50 states, the cruel sport continues on -- typically in secret -- with the purse for a series of dogfights in a single night that could be high as $50,000.

Attorney General Jerry Pappert said, "Under Pennsylvania law, it's a criminal offense to aid in illegal dogfighting and to promote it.

Pappert said an ongoing investigation into pit bull dogfighting in southwestern Pennsylvania led them to the magazine and its publishers, Fricchione and Kelly.

Cookie is a 9-year-old pit bull who was picked up in Clairton in 1999. He was listed in the Sporting Dog Magazine a number of times.

Humane officer Kathy Heckler said, "He had over a thousand wounds. He was in the worst shape. We subsequently found out he was all over the pages of Sporting Dog Magazine."

In addition to listing the winners of dog fights, the publication also advertised equipment and supplies used to train dogs for fights.

"These are treadmills. Dogs are put on the treadmill to train for a fight," Pappert said.

Both Fricchione and Kelly are charged with two counts each of cruelty to animals and once count each of conspiracy to commit cruelty to animals.

Each count carries a maximum penalty of seven years in prison and a $15,000 fine.
