Home Improvement Project Helps Elderly Woman In Need

Vandals Repeatedly Damage Puskar's Home

Posted: 5:16 pm EDT August 9, 2004

Earlier this month, Channel 11 reported that how vandals had been damaging the home of Margaret Puskar, 86, in Mount Pleasant Township.

Monday, help arrived.

Puskar and her son Mick were overwhelmed when six workers from a construction company showed up at her home to repair the damaged exterior free of charge.

"I think they're just wonderful. When I saw them pull up with three trucks this morning, I couldn't believe it. I said to my son, 'It's hard to believe there's good people in the world,'" Puskar said.

Over a period of several years, drive-by vandals on Route 981 have repeatedly hurled rocks, concrete, beer bottles and other debris through Puskar's house.

Puskar said, "I never expected this. When I said my prayers at night, I said, 'Please, lord, make them stop throwing stuff at my home already.'"

The workers repaired holes, replaced siding and put in several new windows. They work for the Kelly

Construction Company of Uniontown whose owner said he was moved to help Puskar when he heard about her plight last week.

Eugene Kelly said, "(It) looks like she's had it pretty rough and I just thought somebody should step up to the plate, and here I am."

Even with rocks being thrown thru her house, Puskar hasn't considered moving. After all, she said she's lived there for 67 years.

Another man, George Mahalek, plans to help Puskar repair her damage by rebuilding her roof and building a fence around her property to protect it from vandalism.

He said he'll be meeting Puskar in the next few days to assess the repairs that will be made and to see what he will still do for her.
