Bush/Cheney Sign Causes Controversy In Economy

Borough Takes Down Campaign Sign

As President George W. Bush and Sen. John Kerry prepare to square off Thursday night in their first presidential debate, another debate is brewing in Economy, Beaver County.

But, this one isn't over the issues.

This debate involves a campaign sign and whether a woman there is allowed to display it in her yard.

The Bush/Cheney sign has been the center of controversy in the community.

Nancy Cernansky said all she wanted to do was show support for the president during this year's election.

But, according to one Economy Borough ordinance, political signs can be displayed only 14 days before an election.

They must then be removed five days after the election.

"I received a letter in the mail, from the Economy Borough stating that if I did not remove my sign they would come into my property, remove my sign, fine my candidate and fine me," Cernansky said.

Cernansky said she did remove her sign.
