A Cranberry Twp man is in jail Thursday after being accused of assaulting a woman in a Walmart parking lot.

Police said the man approached the woman earlier this month.

Charles Hans Steinmetz, 42, posed as a Good Samaritan, however the Cranberry Twp resident has a history of lewd criminal behavior.

Thursday he is in the Butler Co. Jail charged with indecent exposure and indecent assault for the incident that occurred on May 13.

He is being held on $25,000 bond.

Police said the victim first encountered the suspect in the Walmart parking lot and offered to help her check her car which he said was leaking oil and smoking.

When she had her back turned, police said, the man rubbed up against her.

She left the scene and called the police.

Store surveillance cameras caught part of the suspect’s act on tape and along with the victim’s description of the man, police quickly located Steinmetz.

Some shoppers admit a Good Samaritan ploy is a way to gain trust with potential victims but said they would have probably ignored his offers of help.
