MOON, Pa. -- A former high school girls' basketball coach accused of improper conduct with a student appeared in court and turned himself Wednesday morning.
Tom Szczepankowski, 35, of Moon is facing a number of charges, including corruption of a minor and endangering the welfare of children. In a criminal complaint, a 17-year-old girl said the relationship with Szczepankowski, her basketball coach, began in August 2004 and went on into May of this year. She claimed it started with backrubs and progressed to kissing, undressing, genital touching, and simulated sexual intercourse. When asked if there were any other accusations against the coach, Moon Township detectives said, “This is the only one we have brought charges on at this time.”The detective also added they believe the alleged victim to be credible, having probable cause to file these charges.Szczepankowski resigned from his post as teacher and coach with the Moon Township school district June 6, 2005, the same day, the girl went to police with her story. “One thing has nothing to do with the other,” said Szczepankowski's attorney. He added, “that is in no way an admission of guilt.”Szczepankowski told the judge he's never been arrested before and is now residing with his parents. The magistrate told the coach he must have no contact with the alleged victim and by law he must have a behavioral evaluation before he can post ten percent of the $5,000 bond.
