PITTSBURGH -- With a few keystrokes, anyone can have access to the innermost thoughts of millions of children and teenagers across the world, including thousands right here in western Pennsylvania.Xanga.com is a Web site gaining popularity among teens and children everywhere. The Web site is a Web log, or blog, that people can use to create an internet diary.Often, it's used as a daily journal where people can write about their interests, hobbies, and friends. The Web site, which contains a lot of personal identifying information, is a child predator's dream.Allegheny County Detective Tim Haney, who works with the Regional Computer Crimes Task Force, said he has serious concerns about the Web site.Out 40 million users, 91 percent are 13-29 years old.In the Pittsburgh area, over 32,000 people have their own blog on the site.Blogs have legitimate purposes, but Xanga.com can be dangerous because kids are revealing too much personal information about themselves.Kids can post their full names, birthdates, phone numbers, parents' names, hometowns and school names. The Web site even allows kids to post their picture.A child predator can piece together these bits of information and use it to stalk their prey. One mother from Armstrong County learned about the personal blog her daughter posted when we contacted her using the unlisted phone number. The 12-year-old cheerleader said she didn't realize that anyone could log onto her blog. Her mother said she had no idea her daughter was on the Web site. She said that she thought her daughter couldn't go outside of AOL while online because of the firewall they had set up.The family has since removed their computer, and given it to a friend to completely wipe its memory clean. They even took their name off of their mailbox, concerned that someone might come looking for them.Police said predators aren't usually bold enough to come to the house. They most likely will try and contact the child online first.Police said predators will typically groom a child before they try to approach them.Police said if you're not sure which Web sites you're kids are going to, check the computers history. But more importantly, talk to your kids about what personal information they might reveal on the internet.Although a number of young children have blogs, Xanga.com said use of the site is intended for people who are at least 13.Xanga said they will not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
