A local group from Baldwin recently began helping the school district in Bay St. Louis, a hurricane-ravaged town on Mississippi's Gulf Coast.

Teachers from the Baldwin-Whitehall school district along with other members of the community adopted the Mississippi school district.

The teachers traveled there to evaluate the needs.

Four teachers from the Baldwin-Whitehall school district boarded a jet donated to the effort and headed for Biloxi, Miss.

When they landed they drove 45 minutes from Biloxi, Miss., to Bay St. Louis, a small town on the water's edge.

The damage was even more revealing.

Buildings were blown apart, a tractor trailer overturned and there were piles of debris everywhere.

The teachers met with Donna Torres, an administrator with the Bay St. Louis school district.

Torres took the teachers on a tour of the temporary classrooms, where students returned just a couple weeks ago.

The wind and rain from Hurricane Katrina devastated this school district, destroying three schools.

While stores re-opened, many people continue living in tents or government supplied trailers and the Red Cross still makes food runs through the neighborhoods.

Since the hurricane Torres said people from all over the country have donated supplies and money.

The teachers left the devastation behind and headed back to Pittsburgh, even more determined to make a difference.

The very next day one of the teachers loaded his truck up with 100 frozen turkeys and other supplies.

He took off for Bay St. Louis where he will spend Thanksgiving helping those less fortunate.
