A former city police commander will officially take over Friday as Pittsburgh's new chief of police.

On Wednesday Dom Costa's nomination was affirmed Wednesday by Pittsburgh city council 7-0.

However, Costa was grilled for the way the former commander handled a standoff situation with an armed man in Homewood in 2002.

Costa and another officer were wounded.

Costa, who retired later, still has a bullet in his head.

The council sees it as a badge of honor and condemns a recent published report, based on confidential personnel records, showing that Costa faced suspension for his handling of the standoff.

Costa said he is eager to get the matter behind him and get into his job as the new chief of police.
