Deputy Mayor Named For Pittsburgh

O'Connor Temporarily Disabled After Emergency Surgery

A new man is now in charge of the city of Pittsburgh.

A deputy mayor was appointed while Mayor Bob O’Connor was temporarily disabled after emergency surgery on Sunday.

The city's policy director, Yarone Zober, is now the acting mayor.

This is the first time since 1974 that the City Charter has been used to appoint a deputy mayor when the mayor is disabled.

Zober, 31, of Highland Park, was informed of his appointment as deputy mayor Sunday.

The move doesn't require City Council approval, but the City Charter said the city clerk must be informed in writing and that will be done on Monday.

WHO IS ZOBER?
Zober is a former aide to former City Councilman Jim Ferlo.

He is a local lawyer who holds degrees from the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University.

He was named director of the city's General Services Department last month.

COUNCIL MEMBERS MEET
Council members were informed of the move on Sunday.

Members have a meeting set for 10 a.m. Monday before taking a summer recess until just before Labor Day.

O'CONNOR'S CONDITION
Mayor Bob O'Connor had a buildup of fluid drained from his brain Sunday afternoon, officials said.

The 61-year-old mayor was in stable condition after undergoing the 30-minute surgical procedure, his spokesman said.

Doctors at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center performed tests to determine the cause of the fluid buildup, officials said.

The mayor, who has primary central nervous system lymphoma, has been hospitalized since July 10.

Doctors have said that O'Connor lost so much strength during his treatment that he will require intense therapy to be able to walk without help.

O'Connor has undergone chemotherapy to treat four tumors on his brain.

His medical team reported that he will receive his third methotrexate treatment on Monday.

In a news conference on Monday O'Connor's doctors said he is suffering from hydrocephalus, a condition caused where excess fluid builds up in the brain.

When too much fluid builds up it puts pressure on the brain.

If it is not relieved it is a life threatening condition.

To relieve the pressure doctors inserted a tube or shunt about the size of a straw into his brain under the skin through the fluid build up and out the back just above the neck.
