Parents upset Bethel Park teacher moved against his will

BETHEL PARK, Pa. — Students in Bethel Park head back to school Wednesday, but some parents are upset that a teacher was moved to special education against his will.

Jeremy Linz's job move wasn't even on the agenda Tuesday night because it was voted on three weeks ago and finalized, but parents weren't having any of it.

They said what's happening isn't right for the entire district.

The meeting ending with an abrupt adjournment from the board.

Parents demanded the board reconsider its decision to move Linz from teaching social studies to a special education position.

At the last board meeting, Linz voiced his concern over not feeling qualified to do the job.

He was there Tuesday night, but declined an interview with Channel 11.

Administrators argued that he is special education certified and the move is legal.

"We're not making decisions based on finances,” school board member Russ Spicuzza said. "He's a great teacher so he's an educator that can grow and make these students be all they can be."

Linz has told administrators in the past there are far more qualified people who have the experience.

Some parents say it's not fair and it particularly hurts their children.

"Special needs children count and every choice that you make regarding special needs kids has a lasting impact," said Sarah Lykens, a parent of a child with special needs.

Linz is set to be in the classroom at Neil Armstrong Middle School instead of Independence Middle.
