Surveillance video caught a brazen thief not only steal a car from a South Side business, but also dragging a man who tried to stop him.
The South Side auto shop manager is in the hospital Tuesday after the owner said he attempted to stop the thief from taking the car from their lot.
Investigators said the car was parked at Ultimate Auto Body Inc. on South 18th Street on Saturday morning when the thief backed the car up and took the manager with him.
Surveillance video shows the manager hanging on to the 2013 Subaru, while the driver backs up and eventually crashes into a tow truck.
“Mike went flying, and after Mike flew that’s when he broke his leg and everything,” said business owner Joe Sokolowski.
Sokolowski said his manager is now in the hospital awaiting surgery. He said the manager has worked for him for 30 years.
After the thief drove away out of the camera’s view, Sokolowski said the driver continued through the South Side.
“Ended up going to Josephine Street and hit a bunch of cars there. Then on South 28th Street, he rolled the customer’s car on the roof,” said Sokolowski.
Police said the driver then ran away and still remains on the loose.
“Just turn yourself in. You hurt someone pretty bad. You did a lot of damage. Turn yourself in. It’s the right thing to do,” Sokolowski said.
