Christmas tree sells for $1,000 in New York City

NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK — Would you pay $1,000 for a Christmas tree?

It's not a joke -- that's how much at least one tree was going for in New York's upscale Greenwich Village neighborhood.

The business that sold it also has less expensive trees, including some small ones for less than $60.

This is how a salesman who works there justified the four-digit price tag:

"You have to consider the weather five years ago, seven years ago, 10 years ago. You hear every summer about the droughts but you don't think about that come Christmas time when you're buying a Christmas tree. These guys have to pay for their water."

The tree that cost $1,000 has already been sold. Christmas trees are actually more affordable in less fancy parts of the city.
