City seeks development of Uptown neighborhood

PITTSBURGH — New legislation is set to be introduced to help the City of Pittsburgh receive federal and state dollars for Uptown development.

Sandy Kirkavitch has lived in the Uptown neighborhood for her whole life. She has some strong ideas on what she believes the area needs to become vibrant.%

“Some stores would be great,” Kirkavitch said. “People that buy.”

In 2014, city leaders announced a plan to improve transportation and development in Uptown. Justin Miller is the senior planner of the project.

“The primary use now has become surface parking,” Miller said. “It’s not safe to walk or bike in the neighborhood.”

They’re looking to give the Hill District a face lift, too. The Hill Community Development Corporation said the city also needs to be investing in the heart of that district.

The city has asked that the legislation be put on the fast track to get the study started. They’re hoping to get it approved by next week.
