Communities take time to 'Thank A Police Officer'

Communities throughout the Pittsburgh are are tipping their hats to the men and women in blue as part of National Thank a Police Officer Day.

In Allegheny County, 911 employees gathered donations and put together thank you bags for all of the officers in the area they dispatch. Employees at the 911 center said, "The generosity of the businesses was surprising, to say the least."

On Saturday, 911 employees stopped at each of the 36 police departments in the north zone to drop off a bag for each of the nearly 500 officers they dispatch.

"We’re always just afraid of what's going to be on the other side of that call, and we don't ever know what they're getting into when they go there, so we're always nervous when we send them to calls," Erin Rozum of Allegheny County 911 said.

Volunteers from many other parts of the area took part in the celebration, including students who created more than 1,000 thank you cards. Those cards were delivered to stations including Fox Chapel, Harmar, Plum, Murrysville, Penn Hills, New Kensington, Irwin, Derry, Greensburg, Pennsylvania State Police and more.
