Coyote, fox sightings becoming more frequent in Pittsburgh area

PITTSBURGH — There has been a rise in coyote sightings in the Pittsburgh area, particularly in the South Hills, and experts say people are contributing to the problem.

“A lot of people don't understand that when we're putting out bird feed or something that simple, you're creating a food source for these animals,” animal control officer Roy Hayward said.

Squirrels and chipmunks, a source of food for coyotes, are also drawn by bird feed. And small pets are vulnerable to attacks.

In addition to coyotes, another predator is popping up more and more.

“Foxes are on the increase this year and last year. We had an explosion. They seem to be everywhere,” Hayward said.

While coyotes are solitary hunters, foxes are not. A dog was reported to have been attacked recently by two foxes in Mt. Lebanon.

Hayward said people should use caution when letting pets outside at dusk and dawn, suggesting turning on lights and going out with them. He also advises people to ensure that trash is covered and to store it in a garage until pickup day to keep animals away.

In the event of an encounter with a fox, don’t run.

“What you want to do is stop and stand your ground and look bigger. Put your hands up and make a lot of noise and scream and holler,” Hayward said.
