Day after school shooting plot discovered, 2 other schools face threats

PITTSBURGH — A day after an alleged shooting plot was found on a Valley High School student’s personal cellphone calendar, two separate threats of violence were discovered at two other schools in the Pittsburgh area.

Parents in the McGuffey School District in Washington County received a phone call Thursday about a threat of violence found on a bathroom wall at the district’s middle/high school.

District officials immediately put the school on lockdown, as state police and K-9s swept through hallways and classrooms. Leann Wallace, who has a son in the middle school and a daughter in the high school, told Channel 11 News that the uncertainty was terrifying.

“There's cops walking around while they're in the cafeteria.  I'm sure he's scared, wondering what's going on,” she said.

Investigators had not said if anything was found, but school district officials said they take every threat seriously. The students were safe and escorted out in groups. There was no word on whether the person responsible for writing the threat had been apprehended.

Meanwhile, Charleroi Middle School in Washington County was faced with a different threat.

Ed Zelich, the Charleroi Area School District’s superintendent told Channel 11 News that a hit list was found within the middle school and was allegedly created by two students.

According to a letter to parents and guardians about the threat that was

, the parents of students who were on the list were notified.

“A thorough investigation is ongoing with the Charleroi Police Department, mental health agencies, and administration to determine appropriate consequences. Immediate disciplinary action has been served,” the letter read, in part. “Most importantly, we are contacting mental health agencies and therapeutic support personnel to further analyze the students' mental health needs.”

The letter also stated that additional security will be present at the middle school, starting Friday.

As for Valley High School in New Kensington, security was beefed up there Thursday and on lockdown all day as a precaution.

District officials said a student on Wednesday threatened to bring a gun to school Thursday and open fire. He allegedly mentioned the attack in his cellphone calendar.

The student has been suspended.

Authorities are investigating each threat found at each school.
