Hofbräuhaus Pittsburgh Opens On South Side

The newest addition to the South Side Works opened its doors on March 16.

Hofbräuhaus Pittsburgh is only the third Hofbräuhaus location in the United States. Other locations include Las Vegas and Newport.

The German-style bier hall boasts tons of seating, indoor and outdoor, along the Monongahela River. Outdoor seating, including an outdoor bar, is expected to open in early April.

Hofbräuhaus Pittsburgh will brew its premium lager, wheat beer, light lager and dark lager on site. A regular liter will cost $7.75 and a regular half liter $4.50. Seasonal biers will also be offered and will run $9.00 for a liter and $6.00 for a half liter.

Hofbräuhaus says it brews all beers according to the German Purity Law, Reinheitsgebot, which only uses hops, barley-malt and water.

In addition to beer, Hofbräuhaus will offer lunch, dinner and children's menus.

Jim Combs, president of Premier Lube, LLC which operates Hofbräuhaus Pittsburgh, told WPXI.com's Jessica Woiner about some of the most popular menu items.

The Hofbräuhaus pretzels and bier cheese is a popular appetizer, Combs said. It includes imported German soft pretzels with homemade bier cheese.

If you're in the mood for a sandwich, Combs recommends the Bauern pretzel sandwich. It includes ham and swiss cheese served on a sesame seed pretzel bun topped with the homemade bier cheese.

A popular Hofbräuhaus specialty is the Oktoberfest Schweinshaxe which is slow roasted pork shank with crackling, sauerkraut and bread dumpling.

Hofbräuhaus will be open from 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. Monday through Thursday. On Friday and Saturday it will close at 2 a.m. and on Sunday it will open at 10 a.m.

A grand opening is planned for April 29, Combs said.
