Springdale High School is performing “Willy Wonka” this year.

“I chose this musical because I like to involve as many students as possible, and this show has a lot of opportunity for chorus parts,” said director Beth Minda.

Minda has been the director of Springdale’s musicals for five years.  Prior to that, she was the vocal director. 

Freshman Jocey Burns, who is playing the Candy Man, is happy with Minda’s musical choice this year.

“This show has a very special place in my heart.  I grew up watching the Gene Wilder movie, and I fell in love at the start.  He had me at ‘Pure Imagination.’  Also, I did this show once already with the Pittsburgh CLO and am incredibly happy to be doing it again,” said Burns.

Burns has the challenging task of learning a male role.

“It’s going to be challenging playing a man, but I’ve done it other times, so one more time won’t hurt,” said Burns.  “The Candy Man is such a nice guy.  I have a soft spot for the nicer characters in shows.  I find it easier to connect with someone who has a smile on his face,” said Burns.

Burns takes group and private voice at Pittsburgh CLO and private dance at Starlight Dance Academy and plans to pursue a musical theater career.

“I plan on applying for the drama program at Carnegie Mellon University.  I’ve also looked at Point Park and Seton Hill,” said Burns.

Junior Zach Metkler, who plays Charlie Bucket, doesn’t plan to pursue a musical theater career; he’s interested in medical research.  For now, he’s having a great time being a part of his high school shows.

“I consider the cast to be like my second family.  I spend many hours with them every day, so we’ve made close bonds,” said Metkler.  “I do the shows because I love singing and performing.  It’s a load of fun, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world.”

Springdale’s show dates are March 23 and 24 at 7 p.m. and March 25 at 2 p.m.
