Fake racist hunting license sent by student on social media sparks outrage

NATRONA HEIGHTS, Pa. — School officials at Highlands High School in Natrona Heights have confirmed to Channel 11 News that a student sent a photo of a hunting license with a racial slur written on it.

A photo of the fake license was spread via Snapchat among students at the high school.

The school's principal said the offensive and derogatory behavior will not tolerated.

Several angry parents have expressed their feelings on Facebook. One wrote, "It's the kind of hatred, and that makes me sad." Another said, "This is so disgusting. I am so sorry for everyone who had to deal with this."

Christa Jones, who has a child at the school, said the message is disturbing and she's trying to use this incident as a way to bring people together.

"Racism is something that has been here and it will be here," Jones said. "My reaction is what can we do as parents to come together?"

District officials did not provide specific details about the consequences the student could face, but they said expulsion is possible.

Jones said punishing students won't solve anything.

"I want to bring the parents together to do something peaceful; to teach our kids different," she said.

In a letter to parents, school leaders said, "We will be proactive in addressing any prejudiced views in our school and community. ...We will be holding town hall meetings throughout the community this year and invite you to share your insights about how we can move forward together."

Parents in the school district are invited to a meeting to discuss the issue. The meeting is scheduled from noon to 2 p.m. on Dec. 14 at the Hayden Center.
