Father outraged that judge released son's accused killer from jail

PITTSBURGH — A father is expressing outrage over a judge’s decision to release his son’s accused killer. He said it’s an option that he didn’t even know was available to the suspect. He also said he was never informed about Friday’s hearing.

Donald Ketter Jr., 28, died after being shot Feb. 5 outside the Lit Club in Carrick.

Derek Vasos, 37, is accused of firing a single shot from the passenger seat of an Uber that struck Ketter Jr. and ultimately caused his death, police said.

A judge on Friday granted Vasos' release from jail, but ordered him to wear an electronic home monitoring device.

Donald Ketter Sr. said he feels the justice system has failed him and his family.

"I'm holding on by a single thread because of this. This guy is going to go home tonight with his family and my son is in a box,” he said.

Vasos' attorney also spoke with Channel 11 News on Friday, saying his client used self-defense after Ketter Jr. came at Vasos in an aggressive manner.

He said Vasos had a clean record and a license to carry at the time of the shooting.
