Funeral director accused of taking selfies with caskets

HOUSTON, TEXAS — Saturday was a difficult day for a Houston family, made more difficult by what they say was an "insensitive funeral director."

As the family mourned the loss of their 32-year-old cousin, they say the funeral director, David L. Jones, was taking selfies on his phone with their cousin's casket in the hearse.

"You could see that he had it kind of angled, you know, you have it positioned in a certain way to catch the background," Rose Molina said.

Molina said afterward she approached Jones and asked if he took a selfie. She said he told her he was just fixing his tie. Appalled, Molina went to Jones' Facebook page and found many more pictures of Jones with hearses and caskets behind him.

The funeral home's owner said Jones is an independent contractor. Jones is a Texas licensed funeral director with no official complaints registered against him so far.  Molina said she is going to change that.

"We were mourning the loss of my cousin, to be a very family event, private event, it's tainted. He disrespected this day in my family's life," she said.

The Texas Funeral Services Commission, which oversees funeral directors, said it could be a violation of conduct. If it's found to be a violation, then Jones could receive a warning or a fine of up to $5,000.
