Parents act fast, disarm son who brought guns to Utah school

BOUNTIFUL, Utah — Police are applauding two fast-acting parents, who disarmed their 15-year-old son at a Utah junior high Thursday after they realized the teenager had taken the family’s shotgun and handgun,

The parents said they noticed the teenager was acting peculiarly Thursday morning. Once they noticed the missing weapons they drove to Mueller Park Junior High in Bountiful, Utah. They arrived at the school moments after their son entered a classroom and fired one round into the ceiling, the AP reported. Nobody was injured, but the bullet left a hole the size of a small plate, Bountiful Police Chief Tom Ross said.

The suspect, whose name is being withheld because he is a juvenile, also pointed the shotgun at his own neck, Ross said.

The parents arrived and took the boy into the hallway and disarmed him.

Police said the boy had walked to school with the shotgun and two boxes of ammo under a long trenchcoat-type jacket, concealing the weapons. He did not point the shotgun at any other students.

The suspect was booked on suspicion of two charges of theft of a firearm and two counts of taking a weapon into a school.

The incident occurred two weeks after another Utah student stabbed five high school classmates and himself before he was cornered by school workers, according to police.
