Report: Subway chicken contains only 50 percent chicken

Chicken served at Subway restaurants might only contain about 50 percent chicken DNA, according to a recent investigation.

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation made the discovery while investigating what is in the chicken at fast food restaurants, NBC affiliate WKYC reported. Trent University's Wildlife Forensic DNA Laboratory conducted the DNA tests.

Only about half of the DNA in the Subway chicken tested was chicken. The majority of the remaining DNA was soy, WKYC reported.

DNA tests on chicken from other fast food restaurants came back at close to 90 percent chicken, according to WKYC.

While Subway told the CBC it could not confirm the results of the tests, the restaurant chain will “look into this again with our supplier to ensure that the chicken is meeting the high standard we set for our menu.”
