Hundreds of needy veterans receive meals, haircuts, health care at outreach event

Hundreds of veterans received the help they needed Saturday thanks to volunteers in Pittsburgh.

All of the veterans are either homeless or at risk of becoming homeless, so organizers said events like the Sand Down Fair at State AE can really make a difference.

"It's a day for veterans who are the most vulnerable or at risk to really come out and get access to a variety of services they need in one place,” said Ben Stahl, executive director for the Veterans Leadership Program of Western Pennsylvania.

The veterans received free breakfast and lunch, haircuts and showers, and access to 60 different health and service providers.

Now that summer is over, the Veterans Leadership Program is taking items for fall and winter like hats, gloves and heavy coats.

People can drop those items off at the organization’s new location in the Strip District at 2934 Smallman St., donate online at neverforgetvets.org, or call 412-481-8200 for more information.
