FAYETTE COUNTY,Pa. - A Fayette County woman is in critical, but stable condition Thursday after investigators said her husband shot her before shooting and killing himself.
Police said the shooting happened at the woman’s parents’ house in Springhill Township late Wednesday night.
Family members of Joni Bower told Channel 11 News that the couple had separated about three months ago and Joni Bower was staying with her parents.
Investigators said Joni and her estranged husband, Grant Bower, were talking about their separation when Grant Bower became upset and allegedly shot Joni Bower several times.
“Nobody deserves to go through this, ever,” Joni Bower’s cousin, Sandi Swihart-Hicks, said. “I never thought he could do something like that, ever.”
Channel 11’s Dave Bondy reported that Grant and Joni Bower had a 5-year-old daughter.
Swihart-Hicks said the girl was upstairs and heard the gunshots.
“My dad, my grandma, my pap, my mom’s aunts and uncles in heaven -- I truly believe that she has wonderful angels looking over her today. We all did because it could have been a lot worse,” Swihart-Hicks said.
Swihart-Hicks said Joni Bower was in the process of getting a divorce, and the estranged couple was in court last week over a child custody issue.
“He didn't think about anybody but himself when he did that. But he has his daughter, she’s got family, she will survive this and come out stronger than ever," Swihart-Hicks said.
