ARMSTRONG COUNTY, Pa. - The families of two men who committed suicide at the Armstrong County Prison filed federal lawsuits on Friday claiming officials did not do enough to prevent their deaths.
Tyler Roberto Emigh, 21, of Kittanning hanged himself inside his cell on Sept. 3, 2011 and died two days later.
Tyler Lee Watterson, 23, of Rayburn hanged himself inside his cell on Nov. 5, 2012.
Both lawsuits claim prison officials and medical staffers were "deliberately indifferent" and directly responsible for their deaths, and failed to provide prisoners with an adequate number of guards, doctors, nurses and counselors.
"They repeatedly and knowingly failed to enforce the laws and guidelines of Pennsylvania and the regulations of the Armstrong County Prison," according to the lawsuit filed by Emigh's family.
Both lawsuits are seeking monetary damages.
