LEGO-based drone kits are built for surviving crashes

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — A California company is giving consumers a cheaper alternative to some of the drones on the market.  Flybrix has launched a do-it-yourself drone kit made from LEGO.

San Francisco-based

supplies brightly colored special bricks, along with cords, motors and batteries with the goal of teaching owners how to build and fly their own aerial vehicle.

Every Flybrix kit comes with the components needed to build a quadcopter, hexacopter or an octocopter.  The crafts are controlled using an app and are "crash-friendly."  Flybrix says the basic kit is designed to be completely built-- or rebuilt-- within 15 minutes.

The basic kit is available for $149 on the
