GetSkinnyPittsburgh.com: Exercise Right in the New Year

Like most people across the country, you may have aspirations to make some changes in your life to improve your health as we begin 2013. Many people list dieting or exercise as their New Year’s Resolutions. Are you one of those people? Would you like some tips to make your 2013 effort more effective than previous years?

The problem that many people have with using exercise as part of a program to lose weight is that they are doing the wrong type of exercise. Spending countless hours on a treadmill or elliptical doing cardio isn’t going to be very effective in helping you lose weight and keep that weight off in the long term. While there are numerous benefits to cardiovascular exercise, it is best to supplement those cardio workouts with lifting weights or some other form of strength training. Why, you may ask? The benefit of strength training is that it increases lean muscle mass, which in turn, serves to increase your body’s metabolism and allow your body to process food more efficiently. A recent Duke University research study has shown that subjects who performed both strength training and cardiovascular training had the largest decrease in waist circumference.

Rather than spend an entire afternoon on the treadmill to burn 500 calories, wouldn’t it be a lot easier to incorporate some easy strength training as part of your gym routine to allow your body to burn more calories all day long? Of course it would… but this is the key ingredient that most people leave out of their plan.

So let me address a lot of the “excuses” that I often hear…

What if you have joint pain when you lift weights? First of all, I suggest scheduling an appointment to see a chiropractor. You may likely have a musculoskeletal injury that is affecting your ability to use that joint properly. Chiropractors are well-skilled in diagnosing and treating these types of injuries and getting people back to their workouts in no time. Some chiropractors may even recommend specific stretches and exercises to perform to help stabilize those areas as part of their treatment approach.

So we have addressed the aches and pains, but what if you are intimidated by the machines at the gym, or don’t own free weights to use at home? There is an alternative form of strength training that is easy to use and doesn’t require any weights, called vibration therapy training. While this technology is found in many fitness clubs and celebrity homes in California, it is not well known in southwestern Pennsylvania, but has been used successfully by Dr. Brian Moreland and Dr. Shawn Richey’s practices since 2011. Vibration therapy is not only trendy and fun, but it is also very effective. Would you be surprised to learn that spending 15 minutes exercising on a vibration plate is equivalent to spending 60 minutes working out in the gym? Clients and patients love being able to trim their workout times by 75%, perform fun, easy exercises like squats and calf raises, yet see dramatic results.

With the body transformation packages offered by Dr. Moreland and Dr. Richey, vibration therapy is an essential component of those plans. The doctors use a combination of diet modification and detoxification using the ChiroThin program to teach you how to eat properly, Zerona laser bodysculpting treatments using cold laser to help contour the body, vibration therapy sessions to help build lean muscle mass, tone muscles and stimulate the body’s lymphatic system. Using these principles, clients have lost as many as 53 pounds in 6 weeks, with most patients losing between 25-35 pounds. With results like these being the norm instead of the exception, Dr. Moreland and Dr. Richey are so confident that they will be able to help you, they have decided to make a personal guarantee…
