Ligonier police welcome 15-month-old dog as their newest K-9

LIGONIER TOWNSHIP, Pa. — The Ligonier Township Police Department introduced its newest K-9 recruit Tuesday night during the township supervisor’s meeting.

Kilo, a 15-month-old Belgian Malinois, was picked out of 11 potential candidates several weeks ago.

His handler, Sgt. James Friscarella, said Kilo had the right attitude for police work.

"The last six weeks in training have been exhausting. The amount of work that we have gone through just to get the dog ready to patrol the township and to help the citizens out, it's been overwhelming,” Friscarella said.

He said Kilo needs to train for another month or so before he’s fit to work.

Kilo replaces Blek, who was retired after his handler, Lt. Eric Eslary, was killed last year by a suspected drunken driver in a wrong-way crash while on duty.
