PITTSBURGH - Two University of Pittsburgh students are being hailed heroes after they helped pull their elderly neighbor from a burning Oakland home.
Josh Yoskosky and Joe Fogiato heard commotion outside of their home on Parkview Avenue, saw smoke billowing and ran outside to help.
“We knew there was an elderly couple that lived there, and only the woman was outside," said Yoskosky.
The gentleman the students know as Mr. Simon was somewhere inside.
“We saw he was at the top of the stairs, trying to make his way down,” said Yoskosky.
Yoskosky and Fogiato carried the man down the steps. His wife frantically waited on the porch.
“You had to act on it. You couldn’t just stand there, call the cops and wait for something to happen with his age,” said Fogiato.
The two men gave the elderly couple blankets and a bench as the couple waited for friends to pick them up.
Firefighters said a space heater may be to blame for the blaze.
The home suffered heavy smoke and water damage, officials said.
