26 Cal U football players have been in trouble with the law

CALIFORNIA, Pa. — A sixth football player from California University of Pennsylvania was arrested over the weekend in connection with a beating outside an off-campus restaurant that left a man with severe brain trauma.

Police said 20-year-old Shelby Wilkerson, of Harrisburg, a freshman linebacker, turned himself in Saturday.

University spokeswoman Christine Kindl said Wilkerson was immediately suspended.

Interim president Geraldine Jones called the additional arrest "disheartening news" but said "everyone involved in this incident should be held accountable for their actions."

According to police, the players attacked Lewis Campbell as he tried to stop an argument between his girlfriend and a player early Thursday, then fled, yelling, "Football strong!"

"These guys attacked my son, six on one, so that shows a lot about their character," said Campbell's father, Lewis Campbell Sr.

The university forfeited Saturday's football game against Gannon, jeopardizing the Division II team's best season in three years.

Jones met Monday with Cal U's head football coach, as well as the Cal U football team.

At the team meeting, Jones announced that the Vulcan football season will resume this week with Saturday's game at Mercyhurst University.

Jones issued this statement: "In consideration of those players, band members, cheerleaders and others involved with the football program who have lived up to the University's core values and expectations, Cal U's intercollegiate football season will resume this week.

"I have told our Vulcan football players that we will strictly adhere to a zero tolerance policy. Any infraction of team conduct rules will result in immediate suspension from the team.

"I reminded the team that participation in intercollegiate athletics is a privilege, and every student-athlete must be an ambassador for Cal U. Students — including student-athletes — face penalties if they do not uphold University standards."

In light of this and previous incidents, California University will conduct a thorough review of the football program to confirm that its image, recruiting and philosophy live up to the University's standards, officials said.

Athletic director Dr. Karen Hjerpe and acting provost/vice president for Academic Affairs Dr. Bruce Barnhart will lead a task force that will conduct a top-to-bottom review.

They will report the group's findings directly to Jones.

On Monday, Channel 11's Cara Sapida investigated and learned a total of 26 players on the Cal U football team have been in trouble with the law at some point.
