Aide shot near Erie school; lockdown as precaution

ERIE, Pa. (AP) — Police have arrested a suspect after a teacher's aide was shot while walking near an elementary school in northwestern Pennsylvania on Friday.

Police have identified the suspect as 46-year-old Derrick L. Rory of Erie, who was arrested in connection with shooting a nurse’s aide at about 10:15 a.m. near McKinley Elementary School in Erie, where she went inside for help.

The school was locked down until 1 p.m. when students were dismissed early, but Deputy Chief Randy Bowers said students were never in danger. A county 911 dispatcher said the lockdown was precautionary only.

All other schools on the city's east side were also locked down as a precaution.

The victim was treated by paramedics in the school's office before being taken to a hospital, where her condition wasn't immediately available.

Rory was taken to the Erie Police Department where he is awaiting arrangement.
