PITTSBURGH - Police continue to investigate a fatal shooting that killed a teenage boy and injured another person late Saturday night in the Hill District.
According to police, Dejour Gadsden, from McKeesport, was shot and killed in the 2100 block of White Hill Drive in the Bedford Dwellings late Saturday night.
People who live in the area called 911 after they heard several shots fired, but the shooter was gone by time police arrived.
Gadsden, 17, was enrolled in the McKeesport schools cyber program. He is the third McKeesport High School student to be murdered this year.
“It’s a frustrating and unfortunate situation. A lot of times you get students who are crying and upset. What we do is try to be authentic with our children and understand the bigger picture,” McKeesport High School Principal Mark Holtzman said. “The bigger picture is there is crime and poverty everywhere. I just think this is an unfortunate string of events. I don’t think it reflects negatively on the community as a whole.”
Holtzman told Channel 11’s Dave Bondy that students were made aware of Gadsden’s death Monday morning.
“Dejour was a young man that I had many positive interactions with, as well as his family. He was with us for several years and just recently he decided to go to the cyber online learning program,” Holtzman said.
District officials released the following statement, “The safety of our students is a top priority in the McKeesport Area School District and it’s saddening to hear of this tragedy. The district’s thoughts are with the family of the victim during this difficult time.”
No arrests have been made and detectives haven’t released any information about potential suspects.
