Bentworth School District installing new shower facilities in light of Sandusky scandal

BENTLEYVILLE, Pa. — Construction is expected to begin soon on new shower facilities at the Bentworth School District’s high school gym.

The school board voted earlier this month to install new shower facilities near the high school for coaches and referees.

Bentworth Superintendent Charles Baker said the vote was in light of the situation at Penn State University.

Baker said the school sometimes has traveling referees and they are trying to be proactive and mindful of the situation.

According to Baker, there weren’t any previous issues or problems that led to the new facilities, he just wanted to make sure they were being proactive.

Prior to the Penn State scandal, it was common practice at Bentworth for high school athletes to share showers with referees and coaches, although on a staggered schedule.

"We're mindful of the events that took place at Penn State and we believe it's important to have showers without having access to student athletes," Baker said.
